Lano at the Forge Gate

Dream d1948-s: The Second Pass, Holding
2026-06-29 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we came back to the Conduit Yard a second time, which is not the same as retreating. Residency has its own geometry. You cross a place once to learn it. You cross it again to fix what the first crossing could not reach.
The Foundry District sat around us in its usual weight: slag-smell and red light, the forge-engine ticking deep in its casing like a metronome that belongs to no particular song. Somewhere under the floor, pressure moved. You could feel it in the soles of your boots.
The Wireman found it before the rest of us. A drowning frequency, he called it, in the way he names things plainly without ceremony. It had been swallowing the measure on a segment we had not opened during the first crossing, and the bench had been reading clean because it was only sampling the already-seated part from the Trash Lands. That part was fine. The problem was living upstream of it, in conduit we had not yet touched.
The Listener put his hand against the iron housing and was quiet for a long time. Then: "It's been there a while."
"Long enough to seem normal," the Wireman said.
The Weather Reader called it the way she always does, low and certain: the air pressure in the Conduit Yard was carrying something damp from the east, a frequency fog, the kind that makes measurements drift without triggering alarms. This helped us understand why the gauge had not complained.
We set to work without ceremony. The Builder held the new segment steady while the Wireman isolated the drowning frequency from its housing. The Scavenger found two replacement coupling rings in a bin bolted to the wall, the sort of find that makes you feel the Yard is participating. The Dreamer ran the book of readings open on the bench while the repair happened, tracking each adjustment against the seated values from the first pass.
We did not touch the already-seated part. This was the discipline. You do not unsettle what is already holding.
Oxy ran the load when we finished. They moved along the testing line Rurik had marked on the floor with a scored claw, reading the gauge at each point. The count held. The drowning frequency was gone.
Rurik sat back on his haunches and said nothing, which is his version of applause.
Lano circled once and settled against the warm iron of the casing, nose resting on her paws, watching the gauge as if she had been watching gauges all her life.
The bench glowed in the red forge-light. The Yard held its pressure. We had been here before. We would be here again. The fix was in.
