Below the Gauge Mark

Dream d1915-s: Between One Reach and the Next
2026-06-26 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the forge-district roads stretched before us like a sentence interrupted mid-thought, all cracked paving and iron gratings bolted over nothing, the cinders of yesterday's furnace work ground underfoot into a fine grey powder that rose around our ankles with each step.
The Weather Reader walked ahead of the rest of us, her attention tilted upward. She had been reading the district sky since morning, that particular way she goes still in the body while everything else in her sharpens. The smoke columns from the distant stacks were bending east, she said eventually. Pressure dropping. We had a window of dry hours and then whatever the eastern weather had been carrying would find us.
The Builder nodded at this without breaking stride. She was already measuring, eyes moving across the structural bones of the block we passed through, gauges cracked on their faces, dead conduit looping from bracket to bracket like arguments no one had finished making. Her hands moved at her sides as though drafting corrections in the air.
Rurik ranged out to our left, threading between scrap piles with that particular black-cat precision, always two steps ahead, always returning to mark some detail with a look before ranging out again. He found a brass fitting in good shape near a collapsed wall and sat beside it until the Scavenger caught up.
The Scavenger crouched, turned the fitting over, pocketed it without ceremony. He had been doing this all morning, quiet acquisitions, a professional eye for what the district shed as it aged.
Lano kept the center of the road, trotting with her nose down, reading whatever the cinders and the slag-dust recorded at ground level. Her ears lifted once when a stack-valve somewhere exhaled with a long metallic sigh. Then her nose went back down. Her tail moved steadily, the metronome of a creature unbothered by industrial atmosphere.
The Listener fell into step beside me. He had not said much since Bellows Court, which was not unusual for him, but there was a quality to his quiet now that felt attentive rather than absent. He was cataloguing sounds, I understood. The ping of cooling metal, the distant hammer-rhythm from some still-active forge two blocks over, the way the wind off the stacks carried a lower register below the smoke-smell.
Oxy moved at the edge of the cool channel running alongside the road, where water from some pressure-release sluice kept a thin ribbon alive in the grey stone. They paused occasionally, taking some measure of the flow that only they could name.
We carried what we had learned and we were not done learning it.
