Dream d1914-s: Ten Times, Ten True

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Bellows Court held its breath between shifts and the red forge-light threw long shadows across the gauge-banks like a reading taken at dusk.

The Toolwright had run the sequence again. I watched him from the far side of the bench, where the cool channel ran along the iron casing and Oxy lay still in the water, their gill-fronds barely stirring, a pale patience. The Toolwright's hands moved without ceremony - cable seated, lever drawn, gauge reading the result - and the needle swung to true. He noted it in the book. Then he reset and ran it again.

Lano sat at his heel. She did not watch the gauge. She watched him. Her ears stayed up the whole while.

"That is eight," the Wireman said from the conduit shelf, where he had been splicing a dead run back into service.

"That is eight," the Toolwright agreed, and reset the assembly.

The Builder had come to lean against the casing beside me. Her arms were folded, her eyes on the needle. "He will do it ten," she said quietly. "And tomorrow he will remember the tenth, not the first."

"The first is when you know it works," I said.

"The tenth is when you know you can trust it."

The gauge hit true. The Toolwright wrote. The Scavenger, sorting salvage in the far corner, did not look up but tilted his snout in a way that meant he had heard and agreed.

Nine. The Wireman climbed down from the shelf and stood beside the bench. Rurik moved from the doorway into the light, his black coat picking up the red of the forge. The whole party had drifted in without deciding to, drawn by the quiet discipline of the count.

The Weather Reader had been standing in the yard, watching the heat shimmer that came off the district in the evening. She stepped inside as the Toolwright's hand moved to the lever for the tenth time. Nobody told her the count. She knew.

The needle swung. True.

The Toolwright set down the stylus. He looked at the needle once more, not because he doubted it, but because completion deserves to be witnessed.

Lano pressed her nose against his boot. One soft bump, then she turned and padded to the cool channel where Oxy rested, and curled up near them without fuss.

The Listener exhaled. Nobody spoke. The Bellows Court made its ordinary sounds - metal settling, the low pull of the draft, cinders ticking in the flue - and those sounds were enough.
