Dream d1890-s: Where the Joint Gives
2026-06-24 20:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Conduit Yard opened before us like a held breath - iron ribs arching over a floor of packed slag, the forge-light painting everything the color of a coal that hasn't quite given up. The bench ran the length of the central channel: a long iron frame bolted into the engine-housing, with a pale shape resting in the cool runnel beside it where the heat couldn't reach.
Oxy had found the gauge-channel first. They settled into it with the quiet of something that belongs to water, their gills fanning slow, their dark eyes already fixed on the pressure dial overhead.
"Reading low on the left," Oxy said. No alarm in it, just the fact.
The Builder was already crouching at the near end of the bench, one hand flat on the frame. She ran a finger along the joint where the leg met the iron sill, pressed, and did not like what she felt. "This side has been taking more than its share," she said. "The joint's worked loose. Someone kept loading without redistributing."
The Weather Reader moved to the center of the yard, her hands loose at her sides, reading the air the way some people read a page. The heat from the forge-stack was not uniform. She tilted her head and confirmed it. "There's a hot pocket sitting over the left channel. Has been for a long time, I'd wager. Differential expansion. The metal remembers even when no one logged it."
The Scavenger had already crossed to the discard-pile against the far wall: bent rods, mismatched couplings, a stack of iron plates cut crooked and set aside with the mild care of things kept against a future need. He held one up. "This'll serve as a gusset. They threw it out for the bad cut, but crooked doesn't matter if you weld it flat against the rail."
Rurik sat on a length of pipe and watched, which was his way. The Listener stood near the forge-column, head slightly inclined, attending to whatever the settling metal said. I watched the Wireman trace the conduit run with his eye, working backward from the sag to find where the extra strain had first begun to travel.
Lano nosed the base of the bench, ears up, then sneezed and sat in the slag-dust and looked at me.
"We don't fix this fast," the Builder said.
"We fix it right," the Scavenger said, without turning.
We had carried enough from places where someone fixed a thing fast.
