Down Toward the Glow

Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1889-s: Leave to Stay, Leave to Make
2026-06-24 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we walked the last stretch of dead conduit into the Conduit Yard and the heat hit first, before the smoke, before the sound - a wall of dry pressure that made the Wireman blink and the Listener press a hand flat to a cracked gauge just to feel something that was not moving.
The Weather Reader had been reading since we crossed the slag field. She said it plain: the wind here bends around the engine stacks and comes back warmer than it left. A recirculating system, she said. Everything that goes out comes in again changed. The Scavenger listened without comment. He had already spotted the bench - small, bright, bolted directly into the flank of the forge-engine, a thing someone had chosen to put there and had chosen not to leave.
Oxy drifted ahead of us. The cool channel that runs beside the main housing drew them the way water draws anything amphibious - they settled in along the far rim, still and watchful, their wide eyes catching the red-and-grey light off the iron above.
Lano found the base of the bench and sat. Her ears turned back, adjusting to the noise, and her nose worked through all the competing smells: oil and burnt scale and something older underneath, something mineral and patient. She settled there like a thing already decided.
The Builder walked the perimeter. She touched the wall at three points - each time pressing her palm flat, reading whatever she reads through iron. At the third point she nodded, not to anyone in particular. Just nodded.
Rurik jumped to the top of the forge housing and looked out across the Yard - the stacked flues, the cracked gauges still glowing amber on their faces, the book of readings hung on its hook beside the main pressure line, pages rippled from years of heat. He looked at all of it and then looked at me and said: seems like a place that would have us.
We did not vote. The Listener said take leave to stay, and the Wireman said I already counted the outlets, and the Scavenger set his pack down against the bench leg, and that was that.
I stood in the forge-light with slag dust on my boots and the sound of the engine beneath everything like a kept promise, and I thought: this is the thing that makes. Not the waste outside, not the slag field, not the cracked gauges. This. The bench bolted into the engine. The channel where Oxy rests. The book of readings on its hook.
We had crossed the waste to get here.
Now we were here.

Note
Descending into the glowing ruins of Brackenhush, Lano and I press forward through slag dunes, guided by the Weather Reader's warnings and the Scavenger's steady pace.
