Dream d1864-s: Worth Discarded Here

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the gauges were still running.

That was the first strange thing: not that they were broken, but that they were still working, in their way. We came through a field of them in the middle grey morning, the chemical haze sitting low and sulfurous across the slag dunes, and I could hear the tick of needles against cracked glass. Pressure gauges half-buried in the cinders. Temperature gauges sunk to their necks in old pour-off. Each one still alive with some reading, and each reading wrong.

"What are they measuring?" the Builder asked, crouching to one.

"Everything they were calibrated to measure," the Scavenger said. He was ahead of us, picking his way between conduit stumps that jutted from the slag like broken fingers. "They just forgot what calibration means when the source moved on."

Lano was slow this morning. She padded at my heel, favoring her right forepaw, the one with the burn. She set it down carefully on each cooled patch of ground and lifted it quickly off the still-warm ones, nose low, reading what I could not.

The Weather Reader came up beside me, eyes on the sky above the haze line. "Wind from the south-southwest," she said quietly. "Warm and full of ash. The Foundry is working today."

We carried the salvaged piece between us. The Builder had it wrapped in a cut of canvas, tucked under her arm. I did not know yet what it was for, only that it had the right shape for something I had not yet seen.

Then the Scavenger stopped.

He had his head down over a depression in the slag, a hollow where the refuse had settled around something dark and deliberate. He crouched and turned it in his paws: a fitting, cast iron, threaded on one end, the other end flared in a bell curve I recognized from nowhere I could name.

"This," he said, "should not be here."

Rurik sat on a conduit stump behind him, tail wrapped neat around his paws. "How do you know?"

"Because it is not refuse." He was not angry. He was the way he always was when he found something this badly wrong: careful, and precise. "Someone decided it was expendable. It was not. Someone measured without knowing what they were measuring. Same as these gauges. Still ticking. Still wrong."

The Builder set her hand on the canvas-wrapped piece under her arm. The Weather Reader watched the sky. Lano sat down beside me in the warm slag-grit and leaned against my leg, her bad paw lifted just clear of the ground.

We were not yet at the Foundry. But we were reading its waste correctly now, and that was how you earned the gate.
