Dream d1863-s: Both Halves Found

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Trash Lands gave no clean footing. Dead conduit ran beneath the slag crust like root systems of a petrified forest, and with every third step something shifted underfoot - a hollow pipe, a cracked coupler, a gauge whose needle had fused to its stop. We moved in single file, reading the surface before we trusted it.

Lano walked just ahead of me. Her right front paw still carried the slag-burn from two crossings back, and I could see her set it down with a fraction more care than the left. Not limping. Not yielding. Just accounting for what had happened, the way a good traveler does.

The Scavenger moved at the edge of the column, slower than the rest of us. He had a way of looking at the waste not as obstacle but as text. When he stopped, we stopped.

"Here," he said. He knelt at a low dune of grey-brown clinker and began to brush it with both hands. What came free was a length of calibrated rod, still threaded at both ends, the markings on its shaft as clear as the day it was turned. Someone had thrown it away. Not by accident. I could see where the threads had been started on a matching piece and then the work had simply stopped.

"The whole fitting is here," he said. "They got halfway through a repair and walked away from it."

"What does it calibrate?" the Builder asked, crouching beside him.

"A gauge mount. Specific tolerances." He held it toward her and she took it, turned it once, held it to the light. The chemical haze had gone the color of old copper in the afternoon, and the light came through it flat and honest.

"The Foundry's bench will need this," the Builder said. Not as a guess.

I reached into my pack and took out the salvaged piece we had recovered from the deeper slag field. Held it alongside the rod. Not a fit yet. But a related problem. The same abandoned sequence, broken at two different points along its length.

"Same series," the Scavenger said quietly.

The Weather Reader had been watching the haze while the rest of us examined the rod. She turned back now. "Temperature's dropping from the east. That's the forge-heat cutting off. We're close enough to be inside its shadow."

Rurik had climbed the nearest dune while we worked, and sat there with his tail wrapped around his feet, looking toward something we could not yet see. "The light changes ahead," he said.

Lano raised her muzzle and held it there, reading something none of the rest of us could.

We added the calibrated rod to the pack beside the salvaged piece and kept moving. Two parts of someone else's abandoned repair, recovered from the same field of waste, now carried together by people who had not walked away.
