Ash Holds Its Heat

Dream d1861-s: Something of Worth, Discarded
2026-06-22 19:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the dunes breathed.
Not wind - there was no wind in the Trash Lands, only the chemical haze hanging flat and still as a lid. The heat came from below, seeping up through the slag in slow pulses, the kind of warmth that carries no comfort. The ground shifted under each step, fine grey grit giving way to crusted ridges of failed castings, then back to grit again. We had been walking since the light turned brown.
Lano moved ahead of the rest of us, her white coat gone the colour of the haze, her nose working at the surface of a half-buried conduit. She favoured her left paw. Every few steps I watched her adjust her weight without stopping, the small deliberate correction of something healing that has not yet healed.
The Scavenger crouched near a ridge of cracked gauges, a long row of them half-swallowed by the slag, their faces pointed at nothing. He turned one over with his ringed hands - a pressure reader, the glass not even broken, the needle still sitting at a number it would never report again.
"Here," he said. Not loud. The Trash Lands absorbed volume the same way it absorbed everything else.
We gathered at the ridge. Beneath the gauges, partly fused into the slag but recoverable, was a housing assembly - intact, clean inside despite the ruin around it, the kind of part a bench would reach for and find missing. The Builder went down on one knee and looked at it without touching.
"That should not have been thrown," she said.
The Scavenger nodded. "Most of what lands here should not have. But this one in particular."
The Weather Reader stood back and read the air the way she always did, tilting her head at something the rest of us were not equipped to perceive. "The pressure's been venting from this pocket for a long time," she said. "Weeks. Maybe longer. Whatever was built without this part has been compensating."
I thought about the salvaged piece in the Builder's pack. I thought about the bench we had not yet reached. The connections were not difficult to make, once you stood in the right place to see them.
Rurik sat on a flat casting and watched us work the housing free. His tail was still. He was not relaxed - he was paying attention in the way that looks like rest.
The Builder wrapped the housing and stowed it without ceremony. Lano circled once and then pressed herself briefly against the Builder's leg - quick, warm, already moving again.
We kept walking. The slag dunes rose ahead of us, and the heat breathed up through our boots, and somewhere beyond the grey-brown haze the forge was waiting with its bench and its list of what had been missing.
