Dream d1860-s: What the Waste Kept

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the slag dunes had been cooking something since before any of us arrived.

The Scavenger found it first, a shape half-buried in a grey crust of cooled pour, wedged between a length of dead conduit and a cracked pressure gauge whose needle had seized at some forgotten reading. He crouched over it in the chemical haze, stripped gloves pressing the crust, and he made a sound low in his throat that was not quite a word.

"There," he said. "Something solid in there."

Lano held back. She had been three-pawed since the burn, and she stood at the edge of the site with her good paws planted, watching, ears forward, nose working. She did not press into the loose slag. She knew better than to ask a healing thing to work.

The Weather Reader came up beside the Scavenger and held her palm flat above the mound, not touching, just reading the air above it. "It's been insulated," she said. "The pour ran around it, not through. The core stayed cool."

"Which means?" the Builder asked.

"Means whatever's in there wasn't consumed. It sat through the pour and came out intact."

The Builder took the long pry she had been carrying since the second dune and worked it in at an angle, feeling for the seam between the solid thing and the crust. It took time. The waste does not give things back easily. But she had patience that came from knowing materials, from understanding that force applied wrong just breaks what you came to save. She worked it sideways, and the crust cracked along its own fault line and the buried thing came free.

A coupling. Heavy-gauge, flanged, the threads still intact inside their slag-shell coat. The Scavenger turned it over in his hands, pressing the grime back from the markings with his thumb.

"This is a match fitting," he said. "I've seen it on the forge specs. The bench uses them."

"The Foundry's bench?" I asked.

"One of the transit seats on the main press. They wear out. They're not easy to source."

Rurik stepped closer and looked at the coupling without comment, the way he does when something has already been decided and he is simply registering it.

We wrapped it and distributed the weight between us. Lano padded forward then, slow and deliberate, and touched her nose briefly to the package before we stowed it. Then she fell into step, three-legged and careful, as we moved out through the haze.

The Weather Reader read the air above the next dune and said the heat was building from the west, which meant we were walking toward something that was still running.

We already knew that. We were carrying the proof.
