Dream d1314-s: Broadcast From Below

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cave entrance looked smaller than I remembered.

I had walked past it once before, alone, in the early days - the dark mouth in the hillside where I first met Lano. That was over a thousand dreams ago. Now eight of us stood at the threshold and the space felt compressed, not by rock but by the weight of return.

Lano was already inside. Three steps ahead, nose tracking something along the left wall. His tail moved in short, certain sweeps.

"The cable trench runs right up to it," the Builder said. She was on one knee beside the entrance, running a hand along the conduit we had laid months ago. It dove underground here, continuing inward. "Someone else's cable meets ours at this joint. Different gauge. Different period." She pulled a small gauge from her kit. "Forty years older, minimum."

"At least," the Listener said. He had one ear tilted toward the cave mouth. "I can hear the harmonic from here. Without equipment. Something is cycling down there on backup power."

The Weather Reader stood at the entrance, eyes closed. "It's breathing," he said.

"The cave," the Philosopher said. Not a question.

"The air pressure differential. The cave exhales every eleven minutes." The Weather Reader opened his eyes. "I've been timing it since we came over the ridge."

"You've been counting to eleven for the last hour?" the Student asked.

"Sixty-six times, yes."

The Philosopher set down the wagon handle. "The question," he said, in the tone that meant a formal proposition was incoming, "is whether something that cycles is doing so with intention."

"It's pressure differential," the Weather Reader said flatly.

"All intention is pressure differential at some scale."

"That's not an argument. That's a sentiment."

The Builder stood and marked the cable junction on her map without looking at either of them.

The glyphs were visible once we stepped inside - carved shallow into the left wall at shoulder height, running back into the dark. I had seen them before and not read them. The Builder walked slowly along the wall, torch in one hand, touching nothing.

"Routing marks," she said. "This is a routing schema. The same language the conduit joints use. Older version. Someone mapped all of this before we did."

Above the entrance, the White Crane settled onto a ledge of rock and folded its wings. It said nothing. It watched the Builder read.

Lano sat at my feet and looked up once, ears forward.

"Adelante," he said.

I stepped in.
