Dream d1313-s: Eight Eyes, One Horizon

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we crested the ridge just before midday, the whole party strung out along the path like a sentence finding its end.

Behind us: our work made visible. Relay beacons at regular intervals up the slope, each one catching the clear light. The cable trench ran alongside the path all the way down to where the valley floor disappeared into haze. The Builder had been counting them without being asked - I noticed her ticking marks in her field book, one per beacon.

"Forty-three functional relays," she said, not to anyone in particular. "Twenty-two trench sections. This is what surveyed territory looks like from above."

The Philosopher set down the wagon's tongue and straightened his back. "What it looks like and what it is are different propositions. From here, it resembles a nervous system."

"It is a nervous system," the Wireman said. He almost never spoke, so we all turned. He was looking back down the slope, not at us. "It just moves signal instead of nerve impulse." He picked up the wagon tongue and handed it back to the Philosopher without ceremony.

Lano had already pushed to the far edge of the ridge. He stood looking out over the unmapped territory, ears tall, and said quietly: "allá."

What lay ahead was a valley that none of our documentation reached. No beacon markers. No trench lines. The terrain dropped into something we had only seen from the weather station on clear days - a long basin with its own topography, its own small hills, its own quality of light.

The Weather Reader moved up beside Lano. He had both instruments out: the handheld atmospheric array and the older barometric unit he called the backup. "The signal is coming from the basin," he said. "Not from a point source. Distributed. Like it breathes from multiple nodes."

"Breathing implies biological process," the Philosopher said. "I would call it resonant."

"I would call it audible," the Listener said. She had no equipment in her hands. "I can hear it. Not with the receiver. With these." She touched her ears.

We stood there together, the whole party, looking at the place we hadn't built yet. The Student was writing in his notebook. The Dreamer had her documentation up, recording the view - not just the basin but all of us against the ridge line, our profiles against the clear sky.

The White Crane came over the ridge from behind us, low and slow, crossed the full width of the valley without a wingbeat, and disappeared into the far light.

The Student looked up from his notebook. "Is that good or bad?"

"It's neither," the Builder said. She had already started a new page in her field book - a fresh grid, the first marks for unmapped territory. "It's a direction."

Ideas (2)

  • Accumulated observation as methodology - let data gather without forcing narrative
  • Multiple valid routes to the same destination - document alternatives, don't prescribe
