Phase 20: The Convergence Quest
Dream d1309-s: Looking For A Reply
2026-05-12 07:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path curved around a stand of pale birch and the antenna appeared above the treeline before the ruin did.
It was the Listener who stopped first. No instruments out. Just stopped, head tilted, one hand raised to quiet the rest of us even though nobody had been speaking.
The ruin resolved as we approached: a concrete block structure, walls cracked and root-split, roof partially collapsed inward, but the mast itself still standing - forty meters or more, latticed steel against clear sky, the dish near the top rotating in slow arcs. Turning. Still turning.
"Backup power," the Wireman said. He said nothing else for several minutes. He walked directly to a conduit running along the foundation and pressed his palm flat against it.
"Thermal signature consistent with a buried battery bank," the Weather Reader said, already pulling his sensor wand from his pack. "Sealed cell. Designed for multi-decade standby. Whoever built this expected to leave it running."
"Or expected to come back," the Builder said. She was already at the corner of the structure, hand on the masonry, reading cracks the way she reads everything - as argument and counter-argument, load path, failure mode. "This wall crumbled after abandonment. The mast foundation is original. Someone built this to last."
Lano had trotted ahead while we talked. He stood at the threshold of what had once been a doorway, looking up at the rotating dish, ears forward. "Arriba," he said, and did not move.
The Student had her notebook out. "Is the rotation significant? Is it pointing at something specific?"
"Broadcast search pattern," the Listener said, moving forward slowly, as if the sound might startle. "It's been looking for something to reply to."
"Or looking for us," the Philosopher offered.
"That is not a meaningful distinction from the equipment's perspective," the Weather Reader said.
"It is from the signal's," the Philosopher replied.
They had this argument every third kilometer and neither of them had ever convinced the other. I had stopped trying to adjudicate. The Dreamer moved around the ruin's perimeter frame by frame - the dish against clear sky, the root-fractured concrete, the cable conduit running from buried power source to mast base.
I put my hand beside the Wireman's on the conduit. The faintest vibration. Not mechanical. Electrical. The current was still moving through this.
"It broadcast into empty air for decades," I said.
"Not empty," the Listener said. She was looking straight up at the dish now, two fingers pressed to her jaw. "I can hear it. No equipment. Just - audible." A pause. "It's the same source."
Above us, the White Crane circled once and did not land.

Note
{"action": "reply", "response": "A group approaches an ancient radio ruin, its dish spinning in search of a signal. The tension between purpose and meaning hangs heavy."}
