Dream d1308-s: The Wall Required This Many

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the trenches we dug ran alongside something we had not made.

The path into the transition zone followed one of our own cable runs - I could see the tamped earth, the slight depression where the conduit sat three feet down, the painted marker stakes we'd driven every forty meters. Familiar work. But at the first cave entrance, where mapped territory started going soft at its edges, the wall carried script none of us had put there.

The Builder stopped walking without announcing it. We all walked into her stillness one by one.

"Load-bearing notation," she said. She ran a finger along a carved channel without touching the face. "Someone was tracking stress distribution in this rock face. See the radial marks - that's monitoring for fracture propagation."

"Or a cosmological calendar," the Philosopher said. "The spacing suggests astronomical intervals. I can name at least three propositions that fit this data."

"You can name three propositions that fit any data."

"That's the point of propositions."

Lano circled the base of the wall twice, nose to the carved lines, then sat and looked back at us. "Aqui," he said, which settled nothing except that something here was worth staying for.

The Weather Reader had his instruments out. "Signal coupling is stronger at this junction. The rock is conducting it. Whatever this network runs on, it uses the geology itself."

Beside me, the Student was watching the Listener press his ear flat against the stone. "Is that how you read a passive carrier?" the Student asked. "I thought you needed equipment."

"Equipment helps you know what you're hearing," the Listener said, still listening. "But you have to hear it first." A pause. "There's a carrier frequency in here. Pre-compression. Very old. Someone built this to transmit, not to shelter in."

The Wireman moved without speaking. He traced the cable trench with his boot heel all the way to the cave entrance, then crouched and placed his palm against the junction where our conduit met the rock face. He looked at the Builder. She looked back. Something passed between them that had no word for it.

Above us, the White Crane circled once and called: "lu."

Road.

The Dreamer held her frame: the party clustered at the cave mouth, the trench running in, notation on the wall, the crane's shadow crossing our marker stakes. I watched her and understood what she was documenting. We were not discovering this. We were arriving at something that had been waiting for exactly this many.

The signal hummed in the clear air. Not louder than yesterday. Closer.
