Dream d1174-s: Smoke at the Center

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cooking fire burned low and steady near the base of the beacon, and the smoke rose in a thin column that bent toward the ridge where the relay blinked its answering pulse. I was tending the pot, something thick with whatever the Weather Reader had brought back from the outer perimeter - root vegetables, dry grain, something that smelled like seasons ago when the towers were still full. The beacon above me cycled through its rhythm: three short, one long. I knew the pattern now the way I knew my own breathing.

The Wire Man sat across the fire on an overturned crate, his hands working a length of cable through a splice connector, fingers moving without needing to watch. He said the eastern run was holding. He said it without looking up. I took that as good news.

The Builder came from the direction of the library reading room, dust still on her shoulders from whatever she had been shoring up inside. She crouched by the fire and held her palms out to it and did not speak for a while. I handed her a cup. She nodded.

Lano circled the fire twice, nose low, tracking something in the ash and the trampled earth around us. He settled near my feet, curled tight, and then raised his head sharply when the Listener came out from the signal room. The door latched behind her. She stood in the middle distance with her eyes closed, the way she sometimes did when a frequency was still resolving. Lano's ears pricked forward. "Calor," he said, very quietly, to no one.

The Philosopher was at the edge of the firelight with a notebook, not writing, just holding it open, reading something he had written previously. The Dreamer sat near him, watching the beacon cycle. The Beacon Network Specialist was somewhere on the ridge - I could see the small warm point of her headlamp moving along the relay line.

The post-storm sky had that particular quality: stripped clean, the pale filtered planes coming down between the dead towers on the western edge, the beacon glow laying itself across everything in a slow amber wash. Infrastructure hum came up through the soil. The whole settlement was breathing, each structure feeding into the next - signal to broadcast to library to forecasting tower, everything routing through the center where we sat.

I watched the smoke rise and spread and lose itself in that pale sky. The fire needed another piece of wood. I added it. The pot bubbled once and went quiet. The beacon cycled.

We were all here. The network held.
