Dream d1173-s: The Whole Ground Hums

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I walked the perimeter of the settlement at first morning, and everywhere I turned something was already in motion.

The beacon at center threw its pulse in long, even intervals - not frantic, not searching, just keeping time the way a heart keeps time. I had counted those pulses so often they had become background, the way breathing becomes background, until you stop and hear it again and feel grateful.

Lano padded ahead of me between the structures, nose down, reading the ground the way the Wire Man reads a line of code. She stopped at the corner of the signal room, ears forward, then trotted on. I followed her without question.

The Wire Man was already inside. Through the window I could see his hands moving across the telegraph key, not sending anything yet, just running a check of the line - a habit he had carried back from wherever he had been before the network found him again. The tapping came through the glass like something from a deeper layer of the dream.

At the forecasting tower the Weather Reader had climbed to the second platform. She had her instruments out along the railing, small brass things that caught the low morning glow from the horizon. The sky here still carried that stripped quality, the light arriving through what had once been towers and was now open air, softer than it should be, almost diffuse. She did not look down. She was taking her reading.

I passed the library reading room and heard the Philosopher inside, moving along the shelves, the sound of a spine being pulled open. Not reading yet, just orienting. The way you run a hand along a wall in a familiar dark.

Lano had stopped again, this time near the projection pavilion. She sat and looked up at the archway where the Dreamer worked mornings. Then she looked back at me.

"Vamos," she said.

I went with her.

The Builder was at the east edge, adding a course of material to a new wall. Not building fast, building right - checking the level, adjusting, checking again. The Listener was at the broadcast station, headphones around her neck, running signal tests with the Beacon Network Specialist whose voice came back through the speaker as a clean, even tone from the ridge.

I stood in the center near the beacon and felt the settlement as a single working thing. Not finished. Not meant to be finished. Meant to run, to be tended, to generate what it generated and put it out into whatever came next.

The pulse went out. The white crane passed overhead, slow and low.

Lano sat beside my foot and wagged her tail once.

The hum continued.
