Dream d987-s: Ink and Interference

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Philosopher had arranged the wagon at the center of the settlement like a workstation: three crates stacked into a desk, a brass lamp on a steel stake driven into the packed earth, books spread in an order I could not parse but that clearly meant something.

The Builder had run a junction cable from the main power trunk to feed the lamp. No discussion. Just the work.

I was holding the far end of a signal relay cable when the Philosopher looked up and said: a beacon that calls people home is an argument. It says, come and dispute the work here.

I did not have an answer. The Builder did not either. We kept running cable.

The morning's work was extending the relay array eastward - three new terminals spaced along a ridge line, each connected to the central tower by fiber. The Philosopher walked the line with us, not to help string cable but to ask questions at each node. What does this relay carry. Who does it address. What changes between transmission and receipt.

I watched the beacon pulse on the hilltop. I could see it from every station on the ridge.

Lano stayed close. The small white dog moved between my feet and the wagon wheels, nose working the dry air, ears up and rotating. Not restless exactly. Attending to something I had not noticed yet.

Then the first relay terminal threw an error.

I looked at the display. The signal pattern was wrong. Not absent - distorted. The encoding had shifted into something I did not recognize, a structure that repeated without making sense.

The Builder crouched at the terminal. Long silence.

The Beacon Network Specialist came down from the north slope already moving fast. They had seen it from the tower. Relay four garbling. Relay seven now garbling too.

Lano's ears went flat against the skull. A single sharp bark at the air, at nothing visible, at whatever the signal had become. Then, quieter: "Mira." Then the dog went still.

The beacon pulsed once more from the hilltop and the light came back wrong at the edges, fractured in a way it had not been that morning.

The Philosopher stood at the reading table looking at the hilltop and closed the manuscript without marking the page.

The Builder had the junction panel open. Was already tracing back.
