I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Dreamer arrived at first light with a cart of hard cases and coiled cable, the white crane landing on the ridge behind them without sound. Lano trotted out to meet them before I had crossed the yard - nose working, tail moving in short quick arcs - then sat watching as the cases came open.

The equipment was salvage: a projector body rebuilt around a found lens, a portable generator with welded flanges, a folded screen made from painter's scrim stretched over aluminum conduit. The Dreamer laid it all out on the flat ground below the beacon tower without speaking first, sorting by function. I recognized the method from before - inventory before explanation. The white crane walked the perimeter of the spread equipment and stopped near the generator, head tilted.

The Builder appeared with a length of angle iron and looked at the screen frame. Nothing was said. They knelt and examined the corner joints, then stood and walked to the material pile at the edge of the lot. When they came back it was with steel brackets and a driver. The Dreamer nodded.

We spent the morning building the frame: four posts set in gravel, crossbeams bolted at height, the scrim screen mounted on the upwind face so it would read clean after dark. The Dreamer ran conduit for the projector cable along the east post, terminating at a weatherproof housing I had not seen before - something they had built on the road for exactly this kind of site.

"Aqui," Lano said, from the base of the north post. That was where we set the anchor stake.

In the afternoon, before the beacon's evening cycle started, the Dreamer loaded the projector and threw the first images against the screen. They were not dramatic: rooflines, cable runs, a drainage channel cut into clay, a door frame set plumb in a stone wall. Other settlements. Other attempts. The Dreamer annotated nothing - only advanced the sequence at intervals, letting each image sit until we had looked at it fully.

The Builder stopped working. The Beacon Network Specialist came down from the tower. The crane stood at the edge of the structure's shadow.

The images were evidence. That people elsewhere had tried the same things, made different choices, solved the same problems through different means. The Dreamer had carried them back not as lessons but as data - the kind that only accumulates through travel and cannot be transmitted any other way.

After dark the beacon pulse lit the screen between frames. No one had planned for that. The Dreamer tilted the projector slightly to account for it.

The pavilion held.
