Dream d971-s: Light Before Language

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the crane arrived before the Dreamer did.

It settled on the ridge above the construction site, white against the stripped towers, and stood there watching us work. The Builder and I had been clearing ground since morning - pulling salvaged posts from the equipment shed, sorting timber by load-bearing grade the way the Builder had taught me to sort by function, not appearance.

Lano sat near the material pile, nose working the air toward the ridge.

The Dreamer came over the rise carrying cases we recognized - the same worn latches, the same shoulder rig we'd seen disassembled once, years ago, rebuilt into something we didn't fully understand. They set down the cases without greeting, opened the largest one, and began laying out components on a flat section of cleared ground. Not explaining. Showing.

The Builder came over, studied the layout, and picked up one end of a tension rod without being asked. That was enough. The three of us worked from that.

The projection pavilion takes shape through accumulation of decision. We set the uprights first, spaced to the Dreamer's measurements - they walked the distances by foot count, a system built from habit and correction, more accurate than it should be. Crossbeams followed. The Builder had cable ties and proper connectors; the Dreamer had the canvas, rolled tight in a waterproofed sleeve, marked with grease pencil where the grommets had been reinforced.

"Mira," Lano said, and we looked up.

The beacon on the hilltop had shifted to its evening cycle - longer pulse, slower repeat - and in that light the white crane lifted from the ridge and crossed the construction site low, close enough that we could hear the air through its feathers, before rising again to settle on a crossbeam we hadn't finished securing yet.

The Dreamer watched it land. Then went back to work.

By late afternoon we had the frame up. Canvas hung. The Dreamer ran a cable from the projector housing to the generator junction the Beacon Network Specialist had roughed in last week. A test throw of light against the screen - just color bars, just alignment - and the whole structure changed. Not a frame anymore. A surface with a purpose.

The Dreamer ran two sequences from the road. Settlements we'd never seen. Structures built from different problems. Infrastructure solving constraints I hadn't considered yet.

No captions. No explanation. Just the images, in order, while the beacon pulsed behind us and the crane held its crossbeam like it was waiting to see what we'd do with what we'd been shown.

I watched the Builder watching the screen. Taking notes in the margin of a wiring schematic.

That was how it started.
