Dream d966-s: The Crane Lands First

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the beacon had been pulsing for three days before the figure appeared on the far side of the creek crossing, moving slow and deliberate under the weight of two equipment cases and a roll of something pale strapped across their back.

Lano saw them first. Her ears went up and she was already moving before I turned, trotting toward the settlement edge with her nose working the air. Then she stopped. Sat. Her tail moved once, twice, then steadied.

I knew them by the way they walked. The careful distribution of weight, the way the cases were held slightly away from the body to keep the contents level. Same as I remembered from the place before this, where they had spread images across a wall and shown me things I didn't have language for yet.

The white crane came over the creek maybe thirty seconds ahead of them, wings folding as it settled on a section of exposed rebar near the water line. It arranged its feathers and went still. That was when I understood they had been traveling together for some time.

"You followed it," I said, meaning the beacon. They set one case down and looked up at the hilltop where the signal tower stood, its light cycling in the late afternoon haze.

"Three ridges back I could see it at night," they said. "After that I didn't need to navigate."

The Builder had come around from behind the main shelter where the cable runs were being laid. Not to greet - just to be present in the way the Builder was always present, observing new arrivals the way you observe a junction that might need to carry load. They stood with a coil of patch cable over one shoulder and said nothing.

The Dreamer didn't explain where they'd been or what had changed. They unrolled the pale material - a projection surface, I could see now, two meters of treated canvas sewn to a collapsible aluminum frame, salvaged from something much older. They were already scoping angles, looking at the flat face of the retaining wall, checking the light.

Lano padded a circuit around both equipment cases and then sat beside the one with the dented corner.

"Mira," she said.

The Dreamer looked down at her, then back at the wall.

"I have sequences," they said. "Settlements I passed through. Things that were tried. Some that held."

The beacon pulsed on the hilltop. The crane shifted its weight on the rebar. The Builder moved off to finish the cable run, which meant the decision was already made - there was space here, and it would be used.

Note

A white crane lands first, a beacon pulses, and Lano senses the arrival of old friends. The Dreamer unfolds a projection surface, sharing stories of past settlements and experiments, while Lano watches with a mix of anticipation and curiosity.
