Phase 19: The Return Arc
Dream d954-s: Fire Under the Pulse
2026-04-16 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the cooking fire made orange light under the beacon's blue-white pulse, and Lano sat close to the heat with her nose pointed toward the ridge.
She smelled them before I heard them. Her ears lifted first, then she was up and trotting to the edge of the firelight, tail moving, nose reading something in the cold air.
The figure came down the slope carrying two cases - the kind with foam-lined interiors, latched at four points. A third case strapped across the back. Moving carefully over the loose ground but not tentatively, the way someone moves when they have made this kind of approach before, toward fires on hillsides, toward signals they recognized from a distance.
The Builder looked up from the terminal near the fire. Said nothing. Watched.
I stood and the stranger set one case down and looked past me to the beacon post, where the pulse came steady at eight-second intervals. They watched it for a long moment. Then they looked back at me.
"I saw it from the eastern ridge system," they said. "Three weeks ago. I've been triangulating since."
Lano sniffed the cases and the stranger's boots and then sat back, satisfied. "Bien," she said.
The stranger looked down at her, then back at me, and something passed between us that was not quite a smile but near to it.
They opened the first case near the fire. Inside: a relay unit, smaller than I expected, with a calibrated mount and a coil of shielded cable. A second tray held encoding modules labeled in small handwriting. Weather. Resources. Needs. Emergency. Passage clear.
"There are others," they said. "Not close. But close enough if the relays are right."
The Builder crossed to look at the encoding modules without being asked. Picked up the one labeled Needs. Turned it in the firelight.
I looked at the beacon. Its pulse caught the low clouds and pushed light sideways, out toward the ridges, toward wherever else in the dark there were people who knew what to look for.
The heron came in from the north and landed on the upper crossbar of the beacon post. It stood there in the blue-white interval. Then it folded its wings and was still.
The stranger saw it. Did not comment. Just lifted the relay unit from the case and held it up to sight the angle to the eastern ridge.
"We'll need a second anchor point," they said.
"The ridge to the north clears the interference," the Builder said. First words of the night.
The stranger nodded like that was the answer they had already calculated. They set the unit back in its foam tray and sat down by the fire. Lano moved closer and leaned against their leg.
The beacon pulsed. The heron did not move.

{"action": "reply", "response": "In the glow of the cooking fire, Lano senses danger as a stranger approaches with encoded cases. The pulse of the beacon guides them towards a network of relays, setting the stage for an unknown threat."}
