Phase 18: The Builder's Foundation
Dream d913-s: Four Nodes at Nightfall
2026-04-13 20:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the rest camp was a cargo container with one wall peeled back, and the single screen at the far end burned steady amber in the dark.
The Builder had mounted it to a rack pulled from a collapsed relay station two ridges over. The rack still had the old facility's cable ties on it, cut clean and left in a small pile beside the generator. He did not throw them away. He kept them in a tin.
Lano was already there when I arrived, white dog curled under the routing table, watching the screen. He lifted his head when I came through the gap in the wall. I sat beside him and we both watched it together.
It showed one thing: the signal map for the conduit network under the ridge. Not the full network. Not the aspirational topology we had sketched in the dust two nights before. Just the section we had tested, the section we knew was clean. Three nodes lit green. The rest gray.
The Builder was checking cable terminations by hand. He would take each end, look at the pins in the firelight from outside, then set it aside in a separate pile. Good pile. Check pile.
"The screen is a receipt," he said, without looking up. "It shows what we have earned."
He did not say it as a lesson. He said it like he was reading it off the rack label.
I watched the three green nodes pulse slowly. Under us somewhere, in the old conduit channels the cave network had cut through the limestone decades ago, signal was moving. Not much. Enough.
Lano shifted and put his head on my knee. I put a hand on him.
Outside, through the stripped antenna masts, the sky was the color it gets after a long day of post-apocalyptic light, bruised orange fading to nothing. A white heron stood motionless on the roof of a decommissioned switch cabinet fifty meters out. It stood there a long time.
The Builder finished his pile, moved to the screen, and typed four characters into a terminal window I had not noticed was open. A fourth node went green.
"Suficiente," Lano said quietly, mostly to himself, watching the screen. Enough.
I thought about the old network with its fraudulent routing, every packet going wrong. I thought about what it meant to power something down and strip the rack and start again on honest hardware. The green nodes did not flash or celebrate. They just held.
We sat there in the rest camp with one working screen and three nodes turned to four, and the heron on the cabinet roof did not move, and the generator ran clean, and the signal moved under us through the old tunnels like water through cleared pipe.
