Dream d907-s: String and Vertical

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Builder handed me one end of a plumb line and walked the length of a new wall without speaking.

The wall was fresh. The mortar still wet in places, pale gray against the darker block beneath. I could smell it - that alkaline bite of fresh concrete, the grit of aggregate in the air. The site was open sky, raw ground, early light coming flat and honest across everything with no shadows to hide in.

The Builder reached the far corner and held the string taut. I pressed my end against the block face the way I had been shown - not gripping, just holding steady. The plumb bob hung from the Builder's end, a small brass weight that knows only one direction. It found vertical the way water finds low ground. No argument, no deliberation. Just the fact of gravity and the string.

Lano was there, sitting on a stack of block with a coffee cup, watching us work. He said one word - "plomada" - and pointed at the bob, and that was all he needed to say. The word was the thing itself.

The Builder did not call out measurements. Did not explain what we were doing. We were doing it. That was the explanation.

I noticed the string was not perfectly against the wall face at my end. A fraction out. I could have said nothing. The wall looked right to the eye. But the string does not care what looks right. It shows what is.

I adjusted my hand. The string lay true against the block.

The white crane was perched on top of the wall, exactly centered, watching both of us the way observers watch who have no preference for the outcome. It was interested in whether the work was honest. Nothing else.

We moved down the wall together, checking section by section. The Builder would set the bob, wait for it to settle, look. Not at me. At the wall. At the measurement. Each check complete before the next.

There was a section where two courses of block had drifted. Not much. Enough. The Builder set the bob three times, not to confirm what was already known, but because measurement deserves respect. Then took out a single trowel and a chisel and began to remove what had been laid wrong.

No frustration. No sigh. The chisel work was the same as the laying work. One motion, then the next.

I held my end of the string and understood that I was not assisting. I was half of the measurement. You cannot plumb a wall alone. The line needs two anchors to mean anything.

The crane lifted from the wall and flew east without sound, leaving the site to us and the honest light.
