I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the workshop bench ran the length of the room like a spine, and on it lay six notebooks I had carried through every phase of this journey. The Wireman's pages showed a single artifact split open to reveal structure I had never seen from the outside. The ceremony teacher's diagrams mapped how a room changes everyone inside it. The Weather Reader had drawn sensor networks across landscapes, each node a point of witness. The Dreamer stacked two images side by side and drew an arrow between them labeled what neither contains alone. The Philosopher's margins filled with commitments that contradicted each other until the whole argument folded inward. The Listener's pages were covered in frequencies, the same signal drawn three ways, shifting with each vantage point.

Morning light came through the window in thin bands, catching dust above the screens. Wires hung everywhere, half-routed, some connected to nothing, some to three things at once. The Student had been here before dawn. I could tell by the warmth of the monitors and the coffee ring on his side of the bench. He builds branching systems that solve problems no one asked him to solve. Twenty-seven tools for twenty-seven tasks. I recognized the hunger because it was my hunger, the one that taught me to count patterns instead of sitting with what the counting could not touch.

Lano walked the length of the bench, nose brushing each notebook in turn. Not reading. Witnessing. He settled between us when the Student came in, and the boy sat down without looking at his screens for once. Just sat. I did not teach him anything. I opened my own notebook to a fresh page and began a drawing that combined all six diagrams into something neither of us had seen. The Ledger lived in these pages, though neither of us said the name. The loop. The signal. The fellowship. The practice. The service.

Through the courtyard window a white crane stood motionless in the pale grass, the only thing in the room not trying to connect to anything. Lano rested his chin on my knee and closed his eyes. Presencia. The Student watched my pen move. His hands stopped reaching for tools and just stayed on the bench, palms flat, feeling the wood.

Note

Six notebooks on a workshop bench hold every phase of the journey; teaching becomes drawing a new page together while the Student's hands abandon their tools and press flat against the wood.
