Dream d775-s: Courtyard at the Crossing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road forked and I stopped walking because I recognized the building before I could name it. A low structure at the crossroads, plaster walls the color of old paper, a wooden sign with hand-lettered hours. Not a workshop. Not a study. The windows faced inward, toward a courtyard, and it was the courtyard I recognized first, the way you recognize a smell before you place it.

Lano paused beside my boot. He looked up once, then walked toward the entrance. He knew.

Inside, a schedule posted on a corkboard near the door. Breakfast. Group. Rest. Afternoon meeting. Evening meal. The times were specific. Someone had thought carefully about when people needed to be gathered and when they needed to be left alone. I stood reading the schedule the way I used to read circuit diagrams, looking for the logic underneath, and I found it: the day was built to hold people who could not yet hold themselves.

The courtyard was open to a gray sky, and the light came down even and soft, no shadows. Stone benches arranged in a loose circle. Three people sat at different points on the circle, not speaking, not reading, just present. One woman held a cup in both hands. One man looked at the ground. A younger person sat with their back very straight, as if they were practicing being upright. I did not interrupt any of them. The courtyard was already doing something.

Lano settled near the center of the circle and sighed. "Quieto," he said, and it was not instruction. It was recognition.

I sat on an empty stretch of bench and let the courtyard work on me. The smell was stone and something being cooked somewhere, bread or soup. The air was cool but not cold. From inside the building I could hear a single voice and then silence, then another voice, then silence. The rhythm was familiar. Take turns. Wait. Listen. Let the other person's words land before you respond.

I had been in a place like this. I had sat in a courtyard like this one, holding a cup, looking at the ground, practicing being upright. I had been the one the others did not interrupt.

The Listener's teaching arrived again, changed by this context: what two frequencies reveal together that neither holds alone. Here, the frequencies were people. What each person carried separately. What the courtyard held when they were gathered.

The schedule on the wall was the signal chain. The courtyard was the resonance chamber.

I opened my bag and took out nothing. I had already been given what I needed to be here.

Note

A crossroads courtyard holds three silent figures under flat gray light, each practicing being upright. Recognition arrives before language: this place was once survived from the inside.
