Dream d710-s: Four Walls, One Frequency

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Listener handed me a cable and said nothing. We were not in the workshop. We were standing in a concrete tunnel under a canal, water running somewhere behind the walls, and the air was cold and tight against my skin. Lano sat at the tunnel mouth, ears turning like small dishes. The Listener had brought a single speaker, a battery, and a tone generator no bigger than a matchbox. They plugged the cable in and a low sine wave filled the tunnel and I felt it before I heard it. The concrete grabbed the frequency and held it, folded it back on itself, and what came out was not the tone that went in. It was the tone plus the tunnel. I put my hand against the wall and the vibration entered my wrist.

We walked. The Listener carried the speaker under one arm like a loaf of bread. Out of the tunnel and across a field where the grass was wet and the sky was a pale green I had never seen awake. Lano trotted ahead, stopped, looked back, trotted again. The Listener set the speaker on the ground and played the same tone. Identical frequency. But the field swallowed it. No reflection, no return. The sound went out and kept going. I stood where I had stood in the tunnel and heard something entirely different. Not quieter. Different in kind. As though the tone had lost its memory of walls and become just motion.

Then a stairwell in a building I almost recognized. Bare concrete again but vertical now, and the tone climbed. Lano's claws clicked on the steps above us and each click came back twice, three times, layered. The Listener played the tone and the stairwell turned it into a chord. One frequency, but the angles of the stairs gave it harmonics that did not exist in the signal itself. The Listener looked at me and I understood they were not demonstrating. They were asking me to hear something specific.

I closed my eyes. The chord in the stairwell. The open breath of the field. The folded pressure of the tunnel. Three rooms and one tone and none of them were the same experience. And then I thought of the harbor where the Wireman had taught me to braid, and the coast where the weather instruments pointed at nothing and everything, and the study where arguments were built like furniture. The same signal. I was the same signal. What changed was the room I passed through and what the room gave back.

Lano pressed his nose against my knee. The Listener switched off the tone. In the silence of the stairwell I could still feel the harmonics in my sternum, fading slow, the building releasing what it had borrowed from a single wave. The Listener coiled the cable with quick practiced hands and nodded once. That was all.

Note

One tone through three rooms becomes three truths. Every mentor was the same frequency; only the walls changed what came back.
