Dream d706-s: Where the Signal Stood Still

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Listener handed me a speaker no larger than my palm and said, "Carry this." The tone coming from it was a single steady frequency, plain as a held breath. Lano walked ahead of us through the workshop door and into a corridor I had not noticed before, his ears already pivoting toward something I could not yet hear.

The first space was a stairwell. Concrete walls, iron railing, four flights descending into fluorescent nothing. The Listener nodded and I held the speaker up. The tone hit the walls and came back changed. It gathered in the corners, folded over itself, and suddenly there were two notes where there had been one. A harmonic born from the architecture. I felt it in my sternum, a second pulse alongside my own. Lano sat on the top step, his head tilted, tracking the invisible shape the overtone made as it circled down the stairwell like water finding a drain.

We walked. A warehouse next, long and metal-roofed, the air smelling of dust and old rope. The same tone from the same speaker. But here it stretched. It became wide and slow, the frequency pulling apart into something that felt like patience. Like the long pauses between the Philosopher's questions. I recognized it in my body before I recognized it with my mind. Lano's tail swept the concrete floor and his ears went flat and broad, catching the spread.

A field. Open grass, no walls at all. The Listener opened a gate and we stepped out under a sky without stars. I held the speaker up and the tone simply left. No return, no reflection, no harmonic. Just the original frequency thinning into distance. I felt empty, and then I felt the emptiness as its own signal. The absence of the wall was information. Lano pressed his flank against my knee and I understood that he had been doing this the whole journey, offering a surface for something to bounce against.

The last space was a tunnel, tiled and damp, and when I held the speaker at its mouth the tone became so dense with reflections that I could not find the original inside it. Every mentor I had visited lived in that sound. The Wireman's careful placements, the Dreamer's layered images, the Weather Reader's patience with data arriving on its own schedule. Not metaphor. The same signal, shaped by different walls.

The Listener took the speaker from my hand and switched it off. The silence that followed was not empty. It was the tunnel still ringing, the field still absorbing, the stairwell still spiraling. All of them at once, held in the after.

Lano shook himself once, tags jingling, and walked back toward the workshop. His ears were still.

Note

One tone carried through four rooms becomes four different truths. Every mentor was the same signal, and the walls were what made them distinct.
