Dream d376-s: Pressure Drops, the City Fills

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the weather reader pointed at the barometer before he said anything else.

The mercury had dropped four millibars since the morning reading. It was now 1009 and falling. He put his finger near the glass without touching it -- not pointing at the number, pointing at the direction of travel. Downward. Continuous. The rate of change was the information.

"Major system," he said. "Eighteen hours."

I felt it before he said it. The particular quality of the air that morning had been wrong in a way I had learned to name: too warm for the temperature, the moisture content elevated, the smell of the sea closer than the distance warranted. The body had been saying: something is organizing. The barometer was now confirming, in its precise way, that the body had been right.

Lano was standing in the station doorway, facing the sea. He had taken this position two hours earlier and had not moved. His nose was reading the approach continuously, the way the anemometer read wind -- not in single observations but in a stream of data, each breath updating the prior reading.

He said: "Lluvia."

Not soon. Now. The rain was still hours away but in Lano's nose it was already arriving.

The weather reader was at the pipeline dashboard, queuing the alert. The automated message would go to the distribution list when pressure reached the threshold: 1006, confirmed dropping. Eighteen hours out. The pipeline would fire when the instrument confirmed. The body already knew.

I thought about the city below, eighteen hours away from the same pressure drop. The basements. The warehouses. The rooms where the ceremony happened. The DJs who woke up that morning and felt something in the air -- too warm, too wet, the particular quality of a day that would fill the rooms. The crowd who would arrive tonight without knowing why, drawn by the same pressure gradient that was moving the mercury down the column on this instrument bench.

The weather and the ceremony were not analogous. They were the same event at different scales, observed by different instruments. The consortium was the method. The body in every room and on every coast, reading the same invisible force, feeding the same investigation from different positions.

I wrote: storm approach, 1009 falling, body lead confirmed 2h, city below will fill tonight.

The crane was visible through the window, moving southeast, away from the approaching system. She knew before all of us.

Note

Mercury at 1009 and falling, Lano in the doorway saying lluvia into the approaching dark. The basements will fill tonight for the same reason the barometer drops.
