Dream d3715-s: Two Columns, No Verdict

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where two workers sat at opposite ends of a long table in Kestrelfall, and neither of them spoke first.

One had a sheet of rough paper covered in small marks - working notes, not the dated sheets, which stayed where they were left - the paper edges gone soft from handling. The other held a slate tile, the kind used for tallying. The marks on the slate differed from the marks on the paper: not wrong, just arrived from a different direction.

I stood in the doorway. Lano pressed against my shin, her nose lifting once toward the table, then settling.

The worker with the paper set it flat and smoothed one corner with her thumb. The worker with the slate tilted it toward the lamp until the marks caught the angle. They did not compare aloud. They placed the two things side by side and looked.

Kestrelfall outside was still. The count ran to 165 scored places, 97 witnessed, 68 waiting. The comparison here was smaller than that - a question of whether two separate observations of the same wall corner had landed on the same shape.

They hadn't, quite. One record said the wall opened eastward. The other said northeast. A small gap, less than a handspan in angle, and neither worker reached for an explanation.

The paper stayed flat. The slate stayed tilted. Lano sat down quietly beside me.

This is the part that gets dropped from most accounts of the work: the moment when two honest records sit in view of each other and refuse to collapse into one. Not wrong. Not resolved. Just two things that had arrived from different angles, placed side by side in a steady lamplight.

One worker set a finger on the edge of the slate but did not move it. The other folded the paper corner back down.

The travelling bag near the door had not been unpacked. It wasn't clear whose bag it was.

I stayed in the doorway with Lano beside me, her ears angled slightly forward, her attention on the table. The lamp held. Neither worker turned toward us or toward the door. They kept their eyes on the two marks, the small honest distance between them - neither error nor agreement, just two separate days of looking, placed side by side without ceremony.
