Dream d3713-s: A Bag Set Down

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where a traveller arrived at the eastern edge of Kestrelfall in the last of the afternoon, the bag over one shoulder worn through at the strap-ring so the buckle hung loose. I was near the grain store when they came through the gate, and I watched from where I stood.

A worker from the arrivals hall - one of three who kept that threshold that season - came out to meet the traveller before they reached the main steps. Not with urgency. The way you walk toward someone when their posture has already told you they've come far and have something to say.

The traveller set the bag down on the broad stone step. They didn't open it. They spoke for a time, and the worker listened with her arms at her sides and her weight shifted slightly back, the way someone stands when they are taking in something they need to carry correctly.

I couldn't hear what was said from where I stood. The words were not loud. What I could see: the traveller's hands moving once to indicate distance, a flat gesture that mapped something horizontal - a valley, a span, a stretch of days. The worker's head tilted a degree. Then stillness.

When the traveller finished, the worker didn't answer immediately. She looked past them briefly, not in dismissal but in the manner of someone sorting what they've been given before speaking. Then she said something short. The traveller nodded.

A second worker appeared in the doorway behind her - younger, carrying a stack of rough canvas lengths that had nothing to do with any of this - and paused when she saw the exchange, read it, and went back inside without a word.

The bag stayed on the step a moment after the speaking ended. The traveller's hands had gone still. The worker's right hand had come up slightly, palm turned inward, a posture I didn't have a name for exactly: not refusal, not welcome, something between them that said the account had landed and was now being held.

Then she reached down and lifted the bag herself. The traveller stepped back to let her. Whatever had been carried there was no longer theirs to carry.
