Phase 51: The Space Between Accounts
Dream d3710-s: Hands at a Doorframe
2026-11-02 11:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I stood at the open doorway of a low stone building in Dunnebarrow, the afternoon's thin daylight coming through at an angle that lit the floor inside without warming it. My travelling bag sat on the step beside me, its buckle undone, the strap coiled over the top.
Inside, a worker sat at a table with their back to me. They had not looked up when I arrived at the door. The room was quiet enough that I could hear the scratch of their pen, though I could not see what they were writing.
The question I was turning over had nothing dramatic in it: whether to carry the bag in and stay, or to leave it at the threshold and go. Small decisions can take more time than large ones. A large decision arrives with its own urgency and pushes you through. A small one sits in the doorway and waits.
I set my hand against the doorframe. The wood at that height was dark and smooth, worn by the accumulation of other hands at other times - not a mark anyone planned, just the ordinary consequence of a doorway that many people had stood in, thinking. The grain was still faintly visible under the fingers.
The worker at the table moved a single sheet from one stack to another. That was all. The sound was a whisper of paper, and then the room was quiet again.
I picked up the bag by its strap, felt the familiar shift of weight settle against my hip, and stepped across the threshold. The floor was slate, darker than the step outside, and my boots made a different sound on it - not louder, just more definite.
The other worker still did not look up, but their shoulders acknowledged my presence without any performance of acknowledgement. The kind of recognition that costs nothing and means: you have come inside, then.
I set the bag against the wall near the corner where the plaster had gone dull gray, the paint long since worn off by the pressure of other bags, other arrivals. A thin draft moved through a seam in the stonework. I heard it without feeling it - a low, barely-present sound, like a question that did not expect an answer.
The room held the decision the way a room holds anything: without comment. The bag was down. The step was taken. What came next would begin from here.
