Dream d3700-s: What the Bag Brought Back

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I had been sitting at the edge of the workbench for some time when the door opened. The sound of it was the door's own sound - the weight of the wood, the small resistance at the latch - and then the corridor light fell across the flagstone floor.

The person in the doorway carried a worn bag, the kind with brass catches that no longer closed fully. They set it down on the stone rather than bring it inside, and from the front pocket they produced a folded slip of paper - not the notebook, not the dated sheets, something smaller, something made for carrying rather than keeping.

I received it with both palms, the way you hold something when you don't yet know if you want to open it. The slip was creased at an angle that suggested a pocket, not a desk drawer. It had been with someone, in transit, for some days.

No word passed yet. The person in the doorway waited by the bag. The leather had gone soft with use, one strap trailing on the stone.

Eventually I turned the slip over. On the back, a few marks - the kind made quickly, in partial light. Not a verdict. Not a closing statement. Something more like an acknowledgement that the question had been received and was being considered somewhere else, in different hands, at a different pace.

I did not read it aloud.

The corridor stayed quiet. Somewhere below, water moved against the pilings in the slow way it moved at this hour, without urgency. A gull called once and did not repeat itself.

The person at the door did not ask for the slip back. They picked up the bag by its working strap and held it at their side - not waiting for permission, not for a verdict, just for whatever came next in the ordinary sequence of this kind of exchange.

I folded the slip back along its crease and placed it on the workbench in a clear section of the surface, not on top of any existing work. Where it could lie flat without being buried.

The bag, the doorway, the marks on the paper - none of them answered what had been asked. But the account had returned, and now it was here in the room with me.
