Phase 50: The Work That Returns
Dream d3698-s: Report of Stillness
2026-11-01 13:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the lamp had burned low by the time I finished reading the tally back against itself.
Slatewharf sat quiet - the kind of quiet that settles after the last worker has put down tools and the water finds its usual pull against the pilings. I was alone in the room except for Lano, who had wedged herself under the table and lay asleep on my foot.
The answer I was preparing was not complicated: nothing had changed. The counts in the three columns matched what I had written at the start of the visit, and the questions I had carried in found no new evidence either way. Preparing that answer felt stranger than I expected. I had the small block of slate from the day before, the one I had been turning in my pocket until its edges went smooth with handling. I set it on the corner of the table where the lamp could catch it.
The bag was mostly packed. A few things remained on the table's surface: a stub of marking chalk, my outer jacket, the pages I would carry back. The dated sheets were not among them. Those stayed where I had left them, in the stack at the shelf edge. They were not mine to move.
Lano stirred under the table. Her nose came up before her eyes did - she was checking the room's far edges for something I couldn't hear. Then her chin settled back to the floor.
I worked through the answer one more time before committing it: no new arrivals in the census, no resolved status on the unwitnessed places, the score counts the same. The practical report was a report of stillness. I wasn't sure if that was good or merely neutral. It seemed too late at night and too far into the visit to decide either way.
The chalk stub left a short line on the slate before I could stop it. I rubbed it out with my thumb.
Outside, the water moved the way it always moved - no new sound in it, no changed note. I tightened the buckle on the bag and set it by the door, ready. Whatever I was meant to carry back, it was in there: unchanged, accounted for, waiting for the road.
