Dream d3685-s: Where the Ground Gave

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where a worker in Quillhush was standing in a doorway on the third night, holding a creased sheet against the wall beside her. She had a worn bag at her feet, its strap wrapped twice around the buckle the way people do when they've been walking long distances. I came to stand beside her. She didn't greet me with words, only tapped the paper and then pointed to the floor junction where two sections of reclaimed boarding met the older poured foundation beneath.

The paper said two anchor points. She showed me one.

We stood with that for a moment. I didn't press her for an explanation, and she didn't offer one. Both things were true: the record said two, and the eye found one. She folded the sheet back along its original creases.

Lano had been lying near the bag, her chin flat to the floor. Then something shifted in her - ears going rigid, then flat, her small body drawing up from the boards without any sound. I noticed before I heard anything.

A low sound came from the building's far side. Not loud. More like a held breath releasing. The junction where we stood gave a single visible tremor, and then from across the interior came the distinct drop of something heavy - a cable anchor pulling loose from the old poured section. The cable itself, a thick bundle of conduit that had been running along the upper wall, swung down and struck the floor in a coil. Dust rose from where the old foundation crumbled at its edge.

Lano barked. Once, sharp.

The worker did not run. She stepped back from the junction, looked up at the ceiling panel above it, and set her bag against the opposite wall. Another worker appeared from the far end of the corridor - she'd heard the drop. The two of them stood without urgency but also without stillness, reading the space above them.

The building leaned, perceptibly but not catastrophically. A wall seam opened a finger's width that had not been open before. The old section, the one the record showed as anchored twice, was revealing its actual history now.

Neither worker spoke about what the paper had said. They looked at what was there.
