Phase 50: The Work That Returns
Dream d3677-s: What the Doorway Kept
2026-10-31 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the receiving place stood as I had left it. The doorway framed a rectangle of soft afternoon light, and a worker sat just inside the threshold with a bag open across their knees, sorting through what looked like folded oilskin panels - dark material, creased from travel, the kind that has been compressed and carried a long time.
Lano went ahead of me. Her white shape crossed from light into shadow without pausing. Her tail moved once. She sniffed along the base of the wall where stone met packed dirt, then settled near a second worker who was pulling cord from a spool, measuring it against their forearm in quiet repetitions.
I set my own bag down at the edge of the room. The floor had been swept; dust remained in the corners but the center was clean. A third worker stood at the far window with their back to me, adjusting something on the sill - I could not see what, only the movement of their shoulders and the way they leaned, unhurried.
No one acknowledged the arrival directly. One of them nodded toward a low shelf near the door where a cup had been placed. That was enough. I crossed to it and found it held water, not warm, and I drank.
The notebook sat where I had left it. I did not open it. The eight sheets were still folded, pressed flat beneath a stone at the edge of the shelf. I looked at them long enough to confirm the count and moved on.
What I kept coming back to was the cord worker's rhythm - forearm length, the fold, the loop, set aside. Forearm length, the fold, the loop, set aside. A small pile of measured lengths accumulating. Some task that required knowing, in advance, how much you would need.
Lano had gone still near the wall. Her nose worked at a seam in the plaster, then she turned and came to sit beside my foot. Her ears stayed up.
Outside, the light was starting to tilt. Not gone, but no longer overhead. The kind of afternoon where whatever work continues is the careful kind - not what gets started in morning.
I stayed at the doorway a moment before going further in. The stone above the lintel showed no new settling. I pressed my palm against the right side post, which is what I do when I want to register a place before I name anything about it. The stone was cool. Not cold.
That was the first night.
