Dream d3675-s: Dark at the Coupling

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I came through the lower gate of Ospreyfield carrying a worn canvas bag over one shoulder, the clasps still warm from where my hands had held them through the morning's travel. The settlement looked unchanged at first - the slate rooflines, the afternoon light lying flat across the yard - but then I heard the silence.

The pump house should have been ticking. The wheel-and-chain assembly that drove the bellows for the inner forge, a rig of salvaged gearing that had run without interruption through two seasons of hard use, had gone quiet. I set the bag down in the covered passage and walked toward the sound of voices.

A worker was crouched at the coupling housing, both hands braced against either side of the mechanism. A second stood behind her with a lamp tilted low. The salvaged drive collar - a piece fitted from a different mechanism entirely, never a proper match for this one - had sheared where it joined the shaft. Not cracked. Sheared clean, the metal showing a pale fracture line like chalk drawn across slate. The bellows hung slack. The forge on the far side of the wall was cold.

Lano came out of the passage at a trot and circled the coupling housing once. Then she stopped, ears flat against her skull, the whole line of her body lowering a degree, and gave a single short bark before pressing against my leg and going still. I put a hand briefly on her back.

The worker with the lamp said something low to the one crouching, and they both looked at the coupling without answering immediately. There was no spare collar. The part had been fitted once as a temporary measure and had held so long it had become permanent. Now permanent was finished.

A third worker came from the store passage carrying a coil of flat woven strap and a length of hardwood dowel. He set them on the flagstone without speaking. The crouching worker looked at the strap, then at the fracture, then tilted her head slightly and took the dowel.

It would not be the same as the collar. It might hold through the night, or it might not. The forge needed the bellows, and the bellows needed whatever they could construct before the light failed.

I moved my bag out of the passage so they had the full width of the floor to work. Lano stayed near the housing, her nose moving in small arcs along the flagstone, not settling.

The lamp cast the coupling in a tight yellow circle. Outside that circle, the rest of the yard had already passed into shadow.
