Phase 50: The Work That Returns
Dream d3671-s: Ochre at the Lintel
2026-10-30 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I came back along the road to Ospreyfield just as the light changed from afternoon to something cooler. The receiving place sat at the end of the lane the way it always had, stone walls and a wide door propped open, a worn travelling bag left against the threshold by someone who had not yet returned for it.
I did not go in immediately. I stood at the edge of the yard and took account of what was there.
Two workers moved in the interior, visible through the doorway. One was sliding a length of timber against the near wall, not stacking it urgently, just placing it where it would not be in the way. The other sat on a low stool with a length of cord across her knees, separating strands with patient hands. Neither looked up. The floor between them was swept. Three crates along the left wall, and one of them new, its wood pale against the others.
Lano had come ahead of me on the lane and now she stood just inside the door, nose low, reading the floor in slow arcs. She did not bark. Her ears stayed up.
I walked in.
The bag against the threshold was not mine. I stepped around it. The room held the specific quiet of a place between uses - not empty, not active, but holding its breath between one thing and the next.
There was a mark on the lintel I did not remember. Ochre, or pigment rubbed in by a hand, two short strokes crossing at the center. Recent enough that the edges had not fully settled into the stone.
The worker with the cord glanced at me and gave a small nod. I returned it. She went back to her work.
My bag stayed shut. The eight sheets stayed where I had left them. I was not here to open anything.
I crossed to the far wall and put my hand flat against it. The stone was cool and slightly damp, the way stone gets when the seasons turn and the ground is releasing heat. The timber smell of the new crate reached me then. Lano came to sit at my feet, her weight pressing briefly against my ankle before she settled.
Outside, the lane was quiet. A bird moved through the high branches at the field's edge, too far to name. The worker with the timber straightened, regarded what he had placed, then walked toward the side passage without hurry.
The ochre mark on the lintel caught the last of the afternoon light and held it.
I did not count anything. I did not take out a page. I had come back to the receiving place, and the receiving place was there, and that was the whole of what needed to be said.
