Phase 50: The Work That Returns
Dream d3645-s: The Distance Still
2026-10-28 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path turned at the last oak and the building came into view without announcement, its roofline level with the low cloud. I had been walking since the light shifted from white to pale yellow, the bag hanging from my left shoulder - heavier for the return, not from weight added but from distance accumulated, the kind that settles into leather and stitching.
Lano trotted a few paces ahead. Her ears were up. She had caught something in the last quarter-mile that I had not, and her pace had quickened, the small rhythmic ticking of her nails on packed earth going faster. She stopped at the last rise and waited, looking back once.
The building was shut. Not locked against entry - I had no evidence of a lock - but shut in the way a place is shut when work is in progress and the door is the boundary between that work and the arrival of news from outside. No voices. No movement at the upper window. The courtyard held a few pallets of dressed stone and some timber lengths, arranged but not recently touched. The angles of the pieces suggested they had sat in that particular arrangement for at least a day.
I stood at the edge of the courtyard. My hand did not reach for the door. That was what the approach required: to hold the distance still for a moment and let the place remain what it was, without my return entering it.
Someone had left a bucket at the corner of the building. It held a few inches of water and a coil of rope. Whether preparation or aftermath, I could not tell. The question I had carried here - the one about the count, the dates, the current state of the record - sat unspoken between my ribs, not yet voiced, not yet returnable.
Lano sat down beside me in the dust. "Aqui," she said softly, as if confirming what we both already knew: we had arrived, but the arriving was not yet finished.
The door remained closed. I adjusted the strap of the bag. Somewhere behind the wall a hinge shifted once, then settled. No one came. The light continued its slow lateral movement across the slate and ochre, and I stayed at the edge and did not knock.
