Phase 49: The Entrusted Road
Dream d3637-s: Carried Without Claim
2026-10-26 20:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the square was laid with flat stones the color of slate in low morning light. I stood at its far edge, the notebook under my arm, closed. The eight dated sheets were elsewhere - folded into their own corners, undisturbed - and I did not reach for them.
A figure I didn't know crossed the square toward me, or toward the gap where the road began, which was nearly the same direction. They carried a small wooden mallet, the kind with a short handle and a squared face worn smooth at the crown, and held it loosely, the handle resting across their palm.
Another figure came from my left along the square's edge. I watched them reach a point where neither had to stop. The mallet passed between them in a low, unhurried arc - not tossed, not offered with both hands, just given at walking pace. The receiving figure closed fingers around the handle, shifted it once to find its balance, and kept moving toward the road.
No title was spoken. No condition named. The tool simply moved from one carrying hand to another.
Lano sat at my heel and watched them go. Her ears angled forward without urgency, tracking the figure until it reached the first paving that marked the road proper. Then she let her attention drop to the ochre dust at the square's edge and sniffed once at a groove between stones.
The square itself was larger than it looked from the approach. Foot traffic had worn the center smooth, but the margins kept a rougher texture where grit and leaf dust had settled into the mortar lines. I could feel the difference through my soles - the give of packed earth underfoot near the edge, the solid certainty of stone in the middle.
The carrier did not look back. There was no theatrical pause at the road's lip. The mallet went with them the way a coat goes - present, useful, already belonging to the work ahead rather than to the person holding it.
I held the closed notebook at my side. It had nothing to add. The handoff was its own record.
Lano stood when the figure disappeared around the road's first curve. She wagged once, slow, then pressed her flank briefly against my leg before settling back onto the warm stones.
The square was emptying in the way of morning squares - not abandoned, just in transition. Someone would cross it again shortly. The slate held the low light and gave nothing back.
