Dream d3625-s: The Road Takes Linen
2026-10-26 00:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the light had that quality of late morning held behind cloud - not dim but directionless, flat on the low walls of the clinic yard. I was near the corner where the path bends toward the outer road, the notebook under my arm, its cover warm from being held.
The washer came through the passage with the packet braced against her ribs. Clean linen, folded and bound with a length of cord; I could see the squared corners through the wrapping, the edges pressed with care. She did not slow at the gate. She moved through it with the ease of someone who has measured that gap many times, and I stepped aside to let her pass without breaking her stride.
She paused at the edge of the road. One breath, two. The packet still held flat against her side. There was no one waiting. No name called out, no hand extended from the road. She looked once to the left, once ahead, then stepped out and went.
I watched her cross the pale gravel and continue until she was a figure between the low trees at the lane's first bend. The cord around the linen caught the light once - a brief brightening at her hip. Then she was into the shadow of the trees and the road was empty.
I did not follow. The notebook stayed closed. The dated sheets, wherever they were, were not mine to reach for at this moment. The clinic wall was quiet at my back, and the gate stood open a hand's width, the way it does when someone has passed through and the latch has not yet caught.
I found myself thinking about ownership without deciding to. Not who would receive the linen, or whether the carrier had been asked or had chosen. Just the fact of the packet going forward - the thing itself, clean and bound, on its own momentum. The clinic had not called her back. The road had not named her.
The sound of her footsteps faded past the trees. I turned from the gate and walked back along the side of the building, one hand trailing the rough plaster, the notebook still under my arm.
