Dream d3606-s: One Tucked Corner

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rain came sideways against the shelter's low roof and gathered in a steady drip at the corner nearest the ridge path. I was sitting on a flat stone inside, my back against cold timber, watching.

The figure across from me had a wool blanket spread across their knees - not laid out flat but folded double, the way a thing is folded when someone is not yet satisfied with how it will travel. Their hands moved slowly, feeling along one edge. They pressed a thumb into the weave where a small section had grown thin, not worn through but close, and worked it inward, tucking the fragile part inside itself so it would not catch on anything or pull further open on the way.

Lano had pressed herself against my calf and I could feel her warmth through my clothes. She watched the hands too, her ears up, her nose working at the lanolin smell that came off the wool when it was first unfolded. She made no move toward it. She simply watched.

The figure refolded the blanket lengthwise, smoothing each layer with a flat palm before the next came down. There was a particular patience in this, the kind that comes not from slowness but from knowing what matters on a long carry - a worn spot ignored now becomes a hole in the cold, a knot in the wrong place becomes a bruise by the second hour. They checked the short ends next, running fingers along the hem, then paused and worked a loose thread back through the weave rather than breaking it off.

The rain shifted. The drip in the corner sped up for a moment, then found its pace again.

When the blanket reached its final size - a compact rectangle that would fit beneath an arm or strap to the outside of a pack - the figure set it aside and looked at it. Not the look of someone deciding whether to begin, but of someone confirming it is ready. Two different looks. I have learned to tell them apart in this country.

Lano's tail moved once against my ankle, then was still.

The shelter held us both from the wet. Outside, the ridge path disappeared into low cloud. The blanket sat on the dry stone, waiting to be picked up.

The Entrusted Road (d3581-d3640). Useful work passes from one person to another without appointing an owner. One Tucked Corner. I was sitting on a flat stone inside, my back against cold timber, watching.
