Dream d3600-s: Chalk and a Single Cut

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the quarry at late afternoon, the chalk road still pale underfoot, held its own kind of quiet. A figure crouched beside a length of timber laid across two sawhorses, the wood close-grained and pale, with chalk marks running along its length in a careful hand. The marks meant something specific: a measurement, a point where the saw had already bitten, a judgment made before this moment.

I watched from the road's edge. The figure ran a thumb along the grain, pausing near one end where the chalk line met a small knot. The knot sat just inside the mark - not large, but present. The figure studied it without moving for a moment, then reached for a block plane, the kind that fits in a palm, and drew it twice across the end grain in steady strokes. The shaving curled up thin and fell to the chalk dust at their feet.

Then they checked again. The thumb ran the length one more time. Something in the posture settled.

The adjustment was small - a slight correction at the end grain, a bevel made just so, because the timber would ride against something else in transit and the fit had to be right. Not perfect. Right for the journey. There is a difference, and the figure knew it without looking up to see if anyone had noticed.

The chalk marks were still visible after the planing. The figure looked at them and looked at the cut and appeared satisfied, then neither erased the marks nor added new ones. They had served their purpose and would fade on their own.

A low sound carried from deeper in the quarry - a rope under tension, something shifting for the next stage of work. The figure glanced toward it without stopping. They ran a hand flat across the end grain, feeling for any high spot remaining, and found none.

The timber was ready. It had been nearly ready before; now it was ready. The difference was two strokes of a plane and the figure's own certainty, which I could not measure but could see in how they set the plane down and stood without looking back at the work.

I watched them lift one end of the timber, testing its weight across their palms. The chalk road held the last of the afternoon light. The quarry was quiet except for that distant sound, which had already moved on to other work.
