Dream d3594-s: The Weighted Basket

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the orchard track lay stretched under a ceiling of heavy, violet-grey leaves. A shallow wheel rut held yesterday's rain; above it, a leaf turned slowly on a strand of web. I stood in the center of the path, a witness to the quiet mechanics of transit. The notebook remained shut beside me, its cover a blank face; the dated sheets lay where they had been left, undisturbed by any hand.

A figure moved with steady, rhythmic grace, carrying the object. It was wrapped in coarse cloth, and the first carrier paused to adjust its weight. With a deliberate motion, they shifted the bundle, tucking a protruding edge inward until the center of gravity sat true. It was a necessary correction, a silent pact with the road.

Nearby, an orchard worker knelt by a low stool. A basket of seed apples sat between them, the fruit heavy and dull-skinned. The worker reached in, selecting a cluster that leaned too far to the left. With a practiced thumb, they nudged the fruit, rearranging the contents so the basket would not tip during the swaying of the journey. No words were exchanged. There was no owner assigned to the items, only a useful handoff of readiness.

Lano sat by my heels, her white fur catching the dim light. Her ears perked as she watched the worker’s hands. She let out a soft huff of breath, her tail giving a single, muffled thump against the dirt. Rurik was perched on a low-hanging branch of a nearby tree, his black coat blending into the shadows. His amber eyes blinked slowly, tracking the movement of the apples. He did not move, his presence a still point in the preparation.

The atmosphere was one of transition, the moment before the departure begins. The work was being finished. The weight was being balanced. I watched the hands move, ensuring the passage was ready for the long distance ahead.
