Dream d3585-s: Pouring in a Low Room

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the jug made a sound when it was set on the table - a low thunk of sealed clay on worn wood - and I was already in the doorway, watching from the cooler air outside.

The room was amber-lit, the ceiling low enough that the carrier had to duck on the way in. Three people waited inside: the oldest seated in the far corner with her knees drawn up and her lips pale at the edges, two younger ones standing, and all of them going quiet when the jug arrived.

Nobody said much. There was a cup on the shelf - clay, the same muted ochre as the walls - and the younger one reached for it without being asked. The cork came free with a soft, effortful pull. I heard the trickle before I saw it: water catching the slant of afternoon light as it arced into the cup.

The cup went to the oldest first. She took it with both hands and drank. Not quickly. The kind of drinking that fills a silence rather than breaking it. When the cup came away from her mouth she looked at it for a moment the way people look at things that have answered a need, and then she passed it along.

Lano was beside me in the doorway, pressed against my knee, her nose angled toward the clay pots in the corner. Her ears were high and forward. She was perfectly still.

The cup made three rounds before the carrier tilted the jug more steeply. No ceremony in it - just the ordinary motion of a task that keeps going. Someone found a second cup deeper in the room, and that one was filled too. The seated woman pressed both palms flat on her thighs and breathed through her nose, slower now.

The light held, soft and steady. The walls held the quiet between pours. I stayed where I was, near the threshold, and watched the jug do what it was sealed and carried here to do.

Nothing was needed from me. The use was already happening.
