Phase 48: The Hands That Stay
Dream d3577-s: Water When the Relay Cried
2026-10-22 14:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I was standing at the open threshold at the end of the road when I heard the first wrong sound from the beacon.
It came as a stutter - not loud, not alarming at first, just a rhythm that had always been smooth turning uneven, like a wheel that has found a crack in the road. The beacon stood at the high point of the settlement's edge, its signal meant to pulse outward in clean measured beats. What came instead was a garbled run of long tones crowded against each other, then silence, then three short bursts that meant nothing in any protocol I knew.
Lano stood beside me on the threshold stone. She had been sniffing the air a moment before, head low and interested, but the stutter made her lift it sharply. Her body went rigid - not trembling, just tight, the way a dog reads something arriving before it arrives. A bark came out of her, single and clear, aimed not at me but at the air above the beacon hill.
I had not yet moved when I heard footsteps on the road behind me.
The figure coming toward the threshold carried two buckets on a wooden yoke, one on each side, water sloshing in the early light. An ordinary arrival for this hour, someone who comes to the door not because of the beacon but because of routine, because the day asks for water at this threshold as it asks for it every morning. They set the yoke down with a clank of handles and looked past me toward the beacon hill without any special alarm.
Neither of us spoke first. Neither reached for the door, which had stuck again on its sill - swollen by the night's damp, the gap between door and frame not quite closed. The door catches; you shoulder it; you go through. But we did not go through yet.
The relay station on the eastern rise, a wooden post with a dish angled toward the settlement center, began emitting its own irregular sound. A click-pulse that should have repeated every four seconds. It repeated in two, then seven, then not at all. Somewhere on the hill, another station answered with the same broken rhythm, each one passing the distortion forward rather than correcting it.
The figure with the buckets crouched beside the yoke and listened. I crouched too, instinctively, making myself lower, as if that would help me hear more clearly.
Lano did not crouch. She stood at the edge of the threshold, nose working, watching the hill with the steady attention she gives to things she cannot name.
