Dream d3572-s: Each Stone to Its Place

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the wall ran along the ridge above the pasture, its stones the color of old water, and in one place it had opened: two courses missing, the gap wide enough to step through without turning sideways. I did not step through it. I stood on the near side and watched.

Two figures were already there. One moved along the fallen stones at the base of the wall, lifting each with both hands, testing the weight before setting it aside or carrying it forward. The other crouched at the gap itself, reading the courses that remained, running one hand along the top of the last intact stone, checking the bed beneath it with two fingers, the way someone confirms what they already knew. Neither of them spoke.

Lano sat beside me, her ears forward, watching the same work. Her nose moved once, taking in something I could not name, stone dust perhaps, or the grass that had grown into the gap's shade. She did not go forward.

The figure at the wall received the first stone from the other and fitted it into the low course. The sound was a small one: not a crack but a settling, dry and definite. The second stone came next, and they worked it into place together, each pressing down to feel the rock take weight evenly. No tools. No mortar. The wall here had been built dry, and it would be repaired the same way.

I stayed where I was. The pasture fell away below the ridge, pale with late-season grass, the long shadow of the wall lying flat across it in a clean line. A few fence posts stood where I had not noticed them before, marking the boundary the wall reinforced.

The third stone went in harder. The figure on the far side shifted it twice before the other pressed from this side and they found the seat together. There was a moment when both of them simply held it, hands flat, feeling whether it would hold. Then they let go, and the wall was closed.

I watched the line where shadow met grass, and the two figures who worked within it, and did not cross the gap or take hold of any stone.
