Dream d3570-s: What the Hand Learns

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the long stone wall above the pasture as the light came in flat and pale from the east, the kind of light that shows texture without warmth. Lano sat a few paces behind me on the dry grass, nose tilted toward the wall, reading something I couldn't.

The gap was there before I reached it. Two stones had slipped - not fallen entirely, but shifted outward and down, one resting against the other at an angle that should not have held. The wall stretched long in both directions, the same rough-cut slate laid in courses, the same thin lines of mortar gone to powder at the joints. But here it had moved.

The keeper came from the uphill end, walking slowly, one hand trailing the top course. I watched her stop at the gap without any change in her face. She knelt and pressed her palm flat against the stone face just below the slip. Not pushing. Reading. She moved her hand sideways, across the surface, and I could see where her fingers stilled - the exact line where the face had gone from firm to loose, where the material had given something up.

She did that twice. Once at the stone that had slipped outward, once at the base where the course below it carried the new weight. She was not counting, I thought, and not deciding. Only finding the beginning of it.

Lano padded closer and sat beside the keeper's knee without touching. Her ears were up. The keeper moved her hand again, this time with two fingers tracing a crack I hadn't seen from my angle, a thin seam running back into the body of the wall. She followed it from the surface toward the interior and stopped where her fingers could go no further.

The pasture below lay green and level, the long grass catching the light at an angle. A crow crossed the far edge of the field, low and unhurried, and was gone.

I watched the keeper stand and look at the gap. She touched the upper edge of the slipped stone with her thumb, testing whether it would give. It did not. She left her thumb there a moment, as if taking a reading the wall was still completing, and then she stepped back.

The two slipped stones remained at their angle. The wall held on either side. The keeper had not said anything, had not reached for anything. She had only found where the wear began, and let that be the end of it.
