Dream d3558-s: Wear at the Sill

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the seed garden was still holding its night chill when the figure moved along the wall of glass. The frames there are old, the putty gone chalky in the seams, and one pane sat looser than the others. I watched from near the dormant beds, hands in my pockets, not moving closer.

The keeper pressed a palm flat against the glass. Not to push it, just to feel. The pane gave slightly, maybe three millimeters, maybe less, and the hand stayed through that small movement without pulling away. It was a test the way weather is a test: patient, without verdict.

Lano had found a patch of soil near the gate where the beds were sheltered and the ground stayed soft. She was sitting, watching the keeper the way she watches anything that moves slowly and with purpose, her ears tipped forward, her breath a small fog in the cold.

The keeper worked one finger into the gap between the pane and the frame. Just the fingertip. The putty there had cracked clean through, and the seal that remained was the weight of the glass against the wood, nothing more. A thumb traced upward along the frame edge to find the place the flex began, and I could see the concentration in the set of the shoulders, the angle of the chin. This was reading, the way you read a thing by touching it.

I did not move to help. It was not reluctance. The work needed only one pair of hands, and the pair already there knew what it was looking for.

The glass was cold and faintly filmed with condensation on the inside. The keeper's breath fogged it from the outside too, two fogs nearly touching. When the hand came away, there was a print for a moment: five fingers and a palm pressed soft into the damp. Then it faded into the general grey of the surface.

No note was written. The keeper stepped back, looked at the pane from a different angle, looked at the adjacent pane to compare the set of the frame, then moved on to the next section of wall. The work was in the looking and the touching.

Lano watched until the keeper had passed two more frames, then put her nose back to the soil and found whatever she had been tracking before. The garden held its quiet. The pane stayed where it was, still loose, still in place, no worse than it had been an hour before. The hand had only learned its name.
