Dream d3548-s: Setting the Crossing True

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of wet mud reached me before anything else - a clean, cold smell, not unpleasant, the kind that belongs to places that have been soft for a long time.

I was standing on the narrow path that cuts through the reed beds, far enough back that the two workers did not notice me arrive. The light was thin and even, the kind that comes late in the day before color drains out of things.

One of them stood at the edge of the wet patch - a figure in dark clothes, moving slowly, reading the ground with each step before setting weight on it. The other crouched a few meters back, hands on a pale, water-bleached plank already laid flat in the sedge. It was long, wider than I'd expected, and when the first figure looked back, a single word passed between them, too low to hear.

They worked without explaining anything to each other. The crouching figure lifted the near end of the plank while the first pulled the far end across, guiding it over the gap where the path had gone soft and uncertain. The plank was heavy; I could see the effort in the way the crouching figure braced, knees wide, weight back.

Lano was beside me, sitting very still, watching the two figures the way she watches something she does not yet have a word for. Her tail moved once, then stopped. She pressed her nose toward the wet ground and drew in a long breath.

The plank settled. Not perfectly flat - one corner tilted up, and the first figure stepped onto the surface to weight it down. The wood creaked once, found its level, and the figure walked the full length slowly, feeling for flex. Then stepped off and stood beside the path.

The reed beds held their silence. Water moved somewhere just out of sight - a small, steady sound, not a rush, the water keeping to its own direction.

I watched. I did not count what had been repaired or mark where the work had ended. The dated sheets were still where I had left them, and the notebook stayed shut. The soft ground was simply crossable now - the plank grey and washed-out against the ochre mud, placed here for whoever came next, without announcement, without a name on it.

Lano rose and walked forward a few steps. She sniffed the edge of the plank, circled once, and sat again, looking up the path toward where the reed beds thickened.
