Phase 48: The Hands That Stay
Dream d3542-s: The Creak Gone Quiet
2026-10-20 04:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the sound came first - a dry squeal from above, then silence, then the same squeal as someone tested the load. I stood at the edge of the stone apron around the well and watched two figures work in the last of the daylight, the sky going amber over the fork in the road behind them.
One held the pulley housing steady while the other fed a new sleeve of wrapped material onto the axle - deliberate work, fingers pressing the binding tight against the worn wood. The old sleeve lay coiled on the coping, dark where it had rubbed through, the fibers frayed to a fringe. Someone had cut it away cleanly and left it there while they fitted the replacement.
Lano sat close to my ankle, nose lifted into the smell of the well - wet stone and something mineral rising from the dark below. She did not move toward the workers; she watched as I watched, her tail brushing once across the stone.
The one at the housing said something low and the other adjusted the grip, tilting the axle slightly until the sleeve seated. A small wooden mallet came out of a cloth bag. Three taps, careful, gauging the resistance after each. Then a pause, and three more.
The bucket on its length of cord hung free against the stone lip. Nobody had lowered it yet. The repair had to hold first.
I could smell the cut hemp from where I stood - lanolin and something faintly resinous, the oil they had worked into the new wrapping. The ochre light made the wood of the housing look like warm bread. When the mallet went still, the one holding steady turned a hand to examine the fit, running a thumb around the edge of the sleeve.
The test came next: slow, deliberate. One turned the crank by hand while the other watched the axle. The old squeal did not return. What came instead was a lower sound, a smooth tracking, and then quiet. The bucket descended, touched the surface far below - I heard the soft report of it - and came back up without protest.
Lano's ears moved forward at the sound of the water. She set her chin briefly on my foot, then lifted it again.
My hands stayed at my sides. The two at the well coiled the old sleeve and set it aside. The well now ran true. Neither of them looked toward me; they were still checking the crank, testing the new range of motion in the familiar arc, making sure the gift of the repair was real.
