Dream d3540-s: The Sleeve Between Fingers

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the well at the road fork stood in early light, the kind that comes before shadows find their direction, and the path that branches east and north was still empty of travelers. The morning had a coolness to it that settled on the stones of the well's rim like breath.

A figure crouched near the crank. I could not see the face clearly, only the hands, and the hands were attending to something at the rope. The rope was thick, good rope, wound through the wooden crank frame and over the iron peg, and where it passed over the peg most often a sleeve of woven fiber covered the rope's body to protect it from the metal edge. It was this sleeve the hands had found.

I watched the hands close around it. Not a grip - more a reading, fingers wrapping just below where the sleeve met bare rope, pressing gently inward as if asking how much remained. The fibers were worn to a different texture there, finer and denser at once, the kind of fine that means close to gone. One hand slid a little lower, testing where the change began, where sound material gave way to the diminished kind. The fingers paused at that line.

There was no sign of alarm. The hands simply took the measure of it, moving back up and then down once more, mapping the span of the change. A thumb pressed against the edge of the thinning, held there, then released. The motion was entirely interior - nothing announced, nothing marked.

I had the feeling that this was not a finding but a recognition. The sleeve had been wearing for a long season, and the hands had likely passed this way before, had probably noticed the beginning of this thinning before I ever stood at the road fork. What happened now was the noting of a threshold: not this time, but soon, and the hands had made a record of it in themselves.

The rope hung still in the daylight. The iron peg caught a little of the low sun and held it. Below the sleeve the bucket rested at the waterline, patient.

I did not speak and neither did the keeper. When the hands finally withdrew, they moved with the same quietness they had arrived with, and the figure straightened, and the well remained as it had been, except that it had been witnessed, and something in the material had been heard.
